The new ShopRite store in Timonium is now open. Macaroni Kid Timonium and Macaroni Kid Belair were invited to a luncheon a few weeks along with other members of the community at the new store. The owners of the store, the Sumas family, were in attendance. The lunch was delicious and informative. Here’s what we learned:
All ShopRite stores are family owned.
The Sumas family has made a commitment to help fight against hunger in the communities around their stores. At the lunch ShopRite presented the Maryland Food Bank with a check for $10,000. This is their tradition. The family denotes $10,000 every year for every store they own. They have donoted over 2 million dollors are the years.
ShopRite makes sure that the ShopRite brand products are just as good or better as the national brands. They have a QA lab in VA with 6 techs that tests the quality of the food. They use USDA standards to look for things like color, texture, size, consistency etc (for example the smaller the pea the more flavorful it is).
ShopRite has a program called Baby Bucks that gives parents "baby bucks" when purchasing baby products.
The ShopRite Family program lets families earn points for purchasing "family items". Points can be redeemed for rewards.
ShopRite Timonium will offer culinary classes at the store taught by educated and successful chefs in their gourmet kitchen. Classes will start in the fall and are $20. This could be a unique date night with your significant other, a night out with the girls or a Mom and daughter(s) night. I know my Mom would love to come. She really likes to cook and is very good at it I (I don’t like to cook and I’m not good at it.)
They have a dietitian on staff at the store as a part of the LiveRite with ShopRite program. There will be product demonstrations, one on one consultations and more. This is a wonderful benefit. We met with the registered dietitian Erin Peisach, who will work full time at the store. Eventually she will be available to go out and work in the community.
The ShopRite stores are graded each week.
ShopRite has had a recycling program since 1967.
ShopRite stores have a full organic food line.
The store has a cafe and fresh hot prepared food.
If a child is lost at the store, the store is shut down as apart of Code Adam, a system they have in place to locate lost children.
The official grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting was Sunday July 31st.
If you have not made it to the store yet stop by, take a look around and see what the store has to offer for your family. Or visit online at http://www.shoprite.com/Default.aspx
