1. Hands Only CPR
American Heart Association 1min Video of Proper Technique
Teach your children early on, basic life saving skills. Children can practice Hands Only CPR on their stuffed animal, doll or lovey. Schools are now incorporating the Kids Heart Challenge as a way to raise funds to protect all hearts(especially kids). Even my 3 year daughter got involved in the practice! See if your school is participating.

Have an exit strategy from each room of your house and make sure everyone know where to meet outside(neighbors house, landmark). In an event where your child cannot get out of their room go over how to feel if there is fire behind a door or practice stuffing towels and sheets under the door to keep the smoke out. And MOST importantly stress to the children to not hide in a closet or under the bed from the firefighters. Full gear, helmets and a "Darth Vader" voice can be scary and we totally get it! Visit your local fire company and have the kids meet some real local firefighters. We are happy to even dress up in full gear so your children can see we're not as scary.

4. Who to call in an emergency
Discuss with your children what is an emergency and when to call 911. Have them practice memorizing 911 and their home address. We don't know when an emergency may happen so make sure children are familiar with using a landline and a cell phone.

5. What to do if you clothes catch on fire
Practice! Prevention is key. Go over teaching point about fire, as stay away from a grill(hot or not), fireplace and don't play with matches and lighters.
